\u201cThe standard for \u2018high crimes and misdemeanors\u2019 has been met,\u201d Sherman said during a press briefing in the Capitol.<\/div>\n

Sherman said he\u2019s drawing up a single article of impeachment \u2014 the first step in any congressional effort to oust a sitting president \u2014 based on Trump\u2019s firing last month of former FBI Director James Comey, who was leading the bureau’s investigation into Russian interference in the election and possible ties between Trump’s campaign and Moscow.<\/div>\n

Sherman said his resolution is \u201cremarkably similar\u201d to that passed<\/a>\u00a0in 1974 by the House Judiciary Committee as part of the impeachment process that led to the eventual resignation of President Richard Nixon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sherman said\u00a0his draft resolution\u00a0is currently being reviewed by policy lawyers\u00a0and\u00a0he expects to introduce it \u201cfairly soon\u201d \u2014 a timeline he defined as \u201cweeks rather than months.\u201d<\/div>\n
