Numbers can silence pain, erase love, obliterate emotion, and blur individuality. But sometimes numbers can also tell a necessary story in ways nothing else can.<\/p>\n<p>This January, President Bush <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090113232546\/http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/news\/releases\/2007\/01\/20070110-7.html\">announced<\/a> his &#8220;surge&#8221; plan for Iraq, which he called his &#8220;new way forward.&#8221; It was, when you think about it, all about numbers. Since then, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/06\/15\/AR2007061500309.html?hpid=topnews\">28,500<\/a> new American troops have surged into that country, mostly in and around Baghdad; and, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/06\/15\/AR2007061502602_pf.html\">Washington Post<\/a>, there has also been a hidden surge of private armed contractors &#8212; hired guns, if you will &#8212; who free up troops by taking over many mundane military positions from guarding convoys to guarding envoys.
