The West Hartford Democratic Town Committee has passed a resolution calling for the impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. Introduced by town committee member Bob Hurvitz, the action came before the group during its regularly scheduled meeting last week.<\/p>\n

“While it was not unanimous, the clear majority of our town committee members felt strongly enough about the current administration to pass this resolution,”\u009d said town committee chair Maureen Magnan. She says the committee will pass the resolution on to the state’s congressional delegation and the Democratic state central committee.<\/p>\n

Hurvitz notes “It’s particularly appropriate that this resolution was passed on the eve of Memorial Day weekend when we honor our previous wars’ dead and the thousands of American troops who have given their lives in Iraq.”\u009d<\/p>\n

The measure cites what town committee members believe are several reasons to support impeachment including that the duo “lied and manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and the Congress of the United States by fabricating a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and an alleged relationship between Iraq and Al Qaida; lied in order to lead our country into war based on propaganda and false statements”\u009d; and had used unwarranted wire taps of American citizens violating the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.<\/p>\n

The resolution also scores Bush for abusing his power “by violating the constitutional and international rights of citizens and non-citizens by indefinitely holding them as detainees.”\u009d<\/p>\n

According to the Impeach for Peace.org website, dozens of city councils across the nation and Vermont’s legislature have passed similar resolutions.<\/p>\n
