Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, have suggested that Carrboro, known as “The Paris of the Piedmont,” be renamed “The Cradle of Impeachment.”

Civil rights lawyer Al McSurely, who works with the group, recently made the request in an open letter to town leaders.

It’s unlikely, though, that the request will be honored.

Carrboro Mayor Mark Chilton said he’s not sure the town Board of Aldermen will go so far as to publicly support the “Cradle of Impeachment” slogan, even if they support the sentiment.

“I understand the president’s approval rating is below 25 percent nationally, and I would imagine it’s probably lower than that in Carrboro,” Chilton said, but he didn’t believe changing the nickname would be likely to happen.

John Heuer, co-chairman of GRIM, as the group is known, said that the suggestion is one of many actions the group is taking to spur an impeachment movement that he says is growing in momentum.

And Carrboro — along with Chapel Hill and other towns in central North Carolina — is a great place to be an impeachment activist, he said.

“Citizens seem to make connections between local and larger issues,” Heuer said. “There’s a great tradition of resistance here.”

He credits the area’s positive response to the impeachment movement to the fact that residents are well-informed and communicative.

Others support anti-war sentiment for personal or religious reasons, he said.

“Perhaps even more than the level of information and communication is the active faith community,” Heuer said. “People are actively practicing their faith. They take commandments like ‘Thou shall not kill’ seriously.”

Whatever their reason, those in agreement with groups like GRIM will have a lot of ways to show their support in upcoming months.

GRIM has hosted a number of impeachment rallies, featuring songs and speeches, in the area and will continue to do so with their next rally scheduled for this afternoon in Greensboro.

The group is also fostering relationships with similar groups around the country, Heuer said, making right now an exciting time.

GRIM supporters will meet up with activist Cindy Sheehan’s “Summer of Love ’07” march that left Crawford, Texas, on July 10 and will end in New York. Participants will be in Washington — in front of the White House and the Capitol — on July 23.

They will not protest quietly.

“We’ll take our drums with the mission of drumming this administration out of office,” Heuer said.

Locally, GRIM has set up tables at both the Carrboro Fourth of July celebration and at the Festival for the Eno, where they had 840 people sign up for one of their polls.

On the political side, their goal is to get all 13 North Carolina congressional districts to support impeachment, Heuer said.

There has been local support for the movement. The Carrboro Aldermen, like Chapel Hill’s Town Council, did pass a resolution in 2005 asking their delegation to support impeachment. But since then, the board hasn’t opted to take further action, Chilton said.

“I think the fact is that Congress is not likely to take any action on this topic,” he said. “The president deserves probably something worse than impeachment, but I think we can all see that’s not really going to happen.”

But Heuer said GRIM supporters, and other impeachment supporters all over the country, think otherwise. He said he believes Cheney’s impeachment is on the way, and Bush’s will soon follow.

He said many national groups in support of impeachment have events planned in coming months, then added, “and after that if it takes longer.”

“We’re very confident,” Heuer said.

(Original Article)

Anti-Bush activists push for support BY CARA MCDONOUGH : The Chapel Hill Herald-Sun CARRBORO — A local grass-roots activist group would like to give the town a new nickname.
