William Leonard learned the hard way the perils of questioning <a class=\"related\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090506095513\/http:\/\/www.newsweek.com:80\/related.aspx?subject=Dick+Cheney\"><font color=\"#003399\">Vice President Dick Cheney<\/font><\/a>. The veteran National Archives official challenged claims by the <a class=\"related\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20080228220951\/http:\/\/www.newsweek.com:80\/related.aspx?subject=Office+of+Vice+President\"><font color=\"#003399\">Office of Vice President<\/font><\/a> (OVP) to be exempt from federal rules governing classified information. His efforts touched off a firestorm&#8221;\u201dand a counter-strike by Cheney&#8217;s chief of staff, <a class=\"related\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20081006211759\/http:\/\/www.newsweek.com:80\/related.aspx?subject=David+Addington\"><font color=\"#003399\">David Addington<\/font><\/a>, who tried to wipe out Leonard&#8217;s job. (Addington did not respond to requests for comment on the subject.)<\/p>\n<p>Now, Leonard is quitting as director of the Archives&#8217; <a class=\"related\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20080228220905\/http:\/\/www.newsweek.com:80\/related.aspx?subject=Information+Security+Oversight+Office\"><font color=\"#003399\">Information Security Oversight Office (ISOO)<\/font><\/a>&#8220;\u201dthe unit that monitors the handling of government secrets.
