New Mexico State Senator Gerald Ortiz y Pino

another step is taken toward impeaching George W. Bush

On February 16, 2007, the Rules Committee of the New Mexico State Senate approved Senate Joint Resolution 5 (SJR5), a legislative resolution "petitioning Congress to commence the investigation of and impeachment proceedings against President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard B. Cheney."

On February 25, 2007, SMR 5 passed the New Mexico State Senate's Public Affairs Committee on a 3 -2 vote and proceeded to the Judiciary Committee, where it is currently scheduled to be heard tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, March 3, 2007.

In an interview a few minutes ago with the Impeachment Channel, Desi Brown, a staffer in the office of New Mexico State Senator and SJR 5 co-author Gerald Ortiz y Pino, said that discussion now underway involving the State Senate leadership, and vote-counting, might result in SJR 5 being taken up directly on the State Senate floor tomorrow afternoon, bypassing its consideration in the Judiciary Committee.

Asked about the bill's prospects on the New Mexico State Senate floor, Mr. Brown said, "If we can get all the Democrats to show up, I think it has a reasonable chance of passing." He said (at around 1 pm PST) that it should be known "in a few hours" where the bill will be heard tomorrow.

Mr. Brown also provided these points of contact for those interested in weighing in on the question of the impeachment of George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney:

"If they just want to put their name down in support on the list, they can call 505-986-4380."

For talking points in discussing SJM 5 with legislators, they can call Desi Brown at 505-256-0668 or e-mail him at [email protected].
