Iraq Veterans Against the War Occupy Washington D.C.

Keynote speaker Army Lieutenant Ehren Watada had just stepped up to the podium at the 2006 Veterans for Peace annual convention last August 12th, when about two dozen of his fellow Iraq War veterans silently filed up to occupy the stage behind him in a spontaneous act of solidarity for his stand against the war, in effect saying: “We’ve got your back, Lieutenant”.

Lt. Watada’s refusal to redeploy to Iraq – the first commissioned officer to do so – has resulted in a highly publicized, as of yet unresolved court martial and led to family members becoming full-time D.C. lobbyists on his behalf.

Watada stoically paused for a full minute before resuming his speech (YouTube video) as the crowd of nearly a thousand military veterans from many wars stood to thunderously applaud again, just as they had when he was first introduced after dinner moments earlier on the final night of the conference, which was held in Seattle on the campus of the University of Washington.

This past Monday, March 19th in conjunction with other protest events in Washington D.C., around the U.S. and the rest of the world on the fourth anniversary of the Iraq invasion, many of the same members of Iraq Veterans Against the War ‘occupied’ our nation’s capital in an effort to illuminate what innocent civilians in Iraq experience daily during the occupation of their sovereign homeland by the military forces of the United States of America.

IVAW board chair Garett Reppenhagen, one of the organizers of the street theater project, was quoted on their website as saying: “We are calling Monday’s action Operation First Casualty because we believe that truth was the first casualty of this war. Our aim is to show the American public the truth of the US occupation in Iraq.”

Reppenhagen further clarified the mission of IVAW by stating: “It is time for the American people to know the truth so they will act to bring the troops home now.”

Multiple actions were staged over the course of the day around D.C. with local activists volunteering to serve as civilians in authentic portrayals of what actually transpires between U.S. troops and Iraqi civilians.

The tables were momentarily turned, however, when some IVAW members were briefly detained by Secret Service and Park Police according to Indymedia. The activists, shown below with Reppenhagen in the foreground, stood “at ease” while the security agencies decided how to deal with these unarmed, uniformed veterans who had been expressing themselves in accordance with the First Amendment Constitutional Rights that they had sworn an oath to “Support and Defend” upon their induction into military service.

When asked for permission to utilize these photos in conjunction with an article about their activities, Reppenhagen responded: “You can pimp the action all you like. That would be awesome.”

  1. A cool way to bring the war home to these chicken neck bastards in Washington who are a little to sheltered from the real events in Iraq. They make ceremonious trips to Iraq to show they care but actually they are there for their re-election campaign. They don’t give a shit about us we are just cannon fodder to them just look at how they treat our vets at Walter Reed Medical center. So they completely hide the truth from the American people and get re-elected with a photo op they took from a battle ship they never left. One thing though your pretend prisoners should wear masks of Bush, Cheney, Gonzales, Rice, and Rumsfeld with make believe guns to the heads of the captives or make the guys holding the guns wear the masks. Either way it will send a strong message.

  4. You know what these photos are trying to convey. However, looking at them I do not know what they are trying to communicate!

    You need a description beneath each photo. This exercise was an attempt to inform an uninformed populace of what? Human rights violations? I see a bunch of guys in uniforms and some people in cicilian dress but the message didn’t get across.

  5. IWAW members are the true patriots of America. If we had listened to the VVAW members back in the 60s and 70s maybe we wouldn’t have had the necessity of forming another anti-war organization.

  6. Good photos and I expect that there were many more taken.

    Many people get the information on which they draw conclusions and make decisions almost/entirely solely from from photographs/videos rather than from text. (This is a very sorry situation and reflects poorly on the reasoning abilities of those for whom this is the case.) Therefore in order to increase the likelihood that the purpose and meaning of the photos are understood with the intent of the participants in the mock actions of military aggression towards civilians, using well worded photo captions for each and every photo is recommended. Also, I strongly suggest including a briefly stated Introduction and Summary/Conclusion. Tell that what you’re going to show (tell) them, show (tell) them, and then tell them what you showed (told) them.

    In addition, providing links for further description (as you’ve done) let’s those with interest get more information without distracting from the impact of your photo message.

    Some (?many) people can only digest the idea of radically changing their long held ideas in small doses/increments/steps. I’ve recently publicly acknowledged this fact in regard to persuade my Air Force pilot nephew that his continued military activity is not in his or anyone else’s long range best interest. http://selfsip.org/focus/smallsteps.html

  8. I agree that these demonstrations that rely on “irony” or interpretation by the viewer are a little dangerous- it’s easy to see how they could start misunderstandings/ rumors and ultimately not get anyone any closer to a goal.

    That’s why a mission statment or understanding of a mission is so important- if an action doesn’t directly result in impeachment- then it’s probably not a fantastic use of time…and there’s not a lot of time to waste.

    If, however, a group is demonstrating for some sort of expressive or emotional result- then it’s art (issue art, but art nonetheless). Art is very different from demonstration in as much as it has different goals.

    There is also a lot to be said for creating “cognitive dissonance” by which people are forced to reconsider their perspectives on issues through art that presents itself as supporting that which it actually considers loathesome, i.e. Archie Bunker.

    Norman Lear forced hundreds of thousands of people to reexamine their own racism and helped greatly in pushing the agenda of the Civil Rights movement in the late sixties and early seventies by producing a show featuring a racist, sexist old white guy and his family.

    Check out this group: Patriots for Corporate Rights. When they staged a rally recently they chanted: “Give up your rights! Give up your rights! Abolish Congress! Abolish the Supreme Court! The Unitary Executive is all we need! TRUST BUSH! TRUST BUSH! TRUST BUSH!” while holding up signs that said: “WAR IS GOOD BUSINESS”, “GOD DOES LOVE US MORE” and “PROTEST ALL DISSENT”. Nobody who saw that could write it off as “just another protest”.

    Not everyone is able to comprehend the subtleties of satire, irony and agit prop theatre, but we are each playing a role in this.

    Impeachment will succeed as a ‘death of a thousand cuts’. None of our methods unto themselves are capable of accomplishing this monstrous undertaking.

    Our philosophy with Impeach for Peace is to support all efforts that share the same goal. There is no way in advance to know which will be the one that tips the balance in the end. Who would have guessed Rosa Parks staying seated on a bus or Cindy Sheehan camping out in Texas would have been such instrumental actions?

    We are committed to supporting all efforts toward the same goal and are very hesitant to criticize any of them.

    Along those lines we are much more interested in hearing what you are doing toward our shared goals. Please let us know how we can help you with those.

Honorable Citizen, Soldiers and Veterans President Bush and member of the cabinet of the United States of America I want to let everyone know in this great country that our constitution has been COMPROMISED…! Yes COMPROMISED…! by our own administration that will not stand for the rights of the people and especially for those we went to fight the war in Iraq and Afghanistan for the sake of FREEDOM and DEMOCRACY. President Bush and Member of the Congress with all the respect you all deserve you need to remember that the people of the United States elect you to work as a public servant for the constituents of this great country. This position that you all held were appointed by the PEOPLE…! Yes by the PEOPLE..! it is not for you MEMBERS OF THIS ADMINISTRATION to become rich and maintain it for your own ideology or interest. Our constitution first paragraph read like this: We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. • Where is the “Justice” that our Constitution said…! When our wounded returning soldiers and veterans it’s been underrated and rip off of their retirement benefits by our own administration with treacherous ruses in order to safe the budget because they think Military retirement it is a drain on the economy and it is less expensive to pay lump sum severance pay than pay for a life time. • Where is the “Promote the General Welfare” that the constitution said…! When our administration is not doing enough to ensure that our soldiers and veteran receive the care they were promised because the bush administration is trying to balance the budget or more like save money at the expense of our soldiers and veterans the appointees of this administration it is responding to the pressure of the President and lowering their health budget request by faking efficiencies that didn’t exist. Secretary of Veteran Affairs Nicholson need to leave his post he is a shame and disgrace for our soldiers and veteran he is not a “LEADER” that need to be trust because he was denying access to hundred of thousand of veterans to health care by “COOKING the BOOKS” like “ENRON” did with theirs. Look for the repot of the GAO audit showing that the VA bowed to political pressure from the President to lower their budget request for the fiscal years 2003 to 2006. • Where is the “Insure domestic Tranquility” that the constitution said…! When more soldiers and veterans are loosing everything they work for and becoming homeless because our bureaucratic administration it is letting this happen by denying and by far sacrifice we obtained it without at least analyzing that this deserved benefit can be as it is a very poor sample of the meaningless attitude of the government of the United States towards the men and women who has served in our armed forces. • Hopefully someday the military retiree’s pension and the social medical treatments are measured by the glory and honor that is deserved and not by the calculation of the economic impact that we represent. • Hopefully someday the calculation of increase the shield of our motorized equipment it is based on save the life of the soldier and not based on the economic impact that it is going to cost to increase the shield of those vehicles that it is deployed with our soldiers to the war zone. As you can see it is my anguish and sadness to see what is happening to our citizens that elect our members of our government. For that reason I want to ask President Bush and the members of the cabinet if they think that this is right…! And allow this to continue while we promoting democracy around the world and sending our finest troops to harm ways to defend and protect the interest and security of our country. Yes…! To defend and protect our interest and security of our country this misleading situation from our representative has to end don’t lie to the people that elect you. Honorable citizens I urge you to write our administration and let them know that we are aware of their misleading and rhetorical shameful attitude toward us that this has to stop they want the vote of the people for this coming election they need first to promise to the people that this unfair practice it is going to change that something has to be done and they has to admit that this administration has Failed its own people betraying us like we are third class citizen and not only betrayed its citizen but democracy too.   12. March 16, 2005 Are You Really a Veteran? Rep. Steve Buyer is redefining your status Opinion by Larry Scott Are you really a veteran? Better check it fast. I did. I’ve got my DD-214 that says “honorable discharge.” I’ve got the red-white-and-blue VA identification card complete with lousy picture and the “service-connected” rating. So, I must be a veteran. Right? Not if Rep. Steve Buyer (R-IN), chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, has his way. Buyer is trying to rewrite the definition of “veteran” in a cold and calculated manner that could cost millions of veterans their benefits. Buyer recently won a political tug-of-war and replaced Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) as chairman of HVAC. Smith was known as a true friend of veterans and often broke ranks with his party to forward legislation favorable to the veteran community. Not so with Buyer. In a recent interview with journalist Tom Philpott, Buyer stated, “While some veterans’ organizations like to create a theme, that `A veteran is a veteran [and] there is no difference,’ I disagree.” Shortly after winning the chair at HVAC Buyer said, “Some of the veterans service organizations, they are having this belief that everyone should have open access to the VA system, when in fact I believe that the VA system should follow its core constituency and the intent of Congress when we laid out our priorities, and that was in fact to take care of our disabled and indigent veterans first.” (This subject was covered in my Military.com article on “Welfarizing the VA.”) So, what is happening here? Buyer is trying to redefine “veteran” and in so-doing reshape benefit programs to meet his new definition. In short, this means fewer benefits for fewer veterans. The two keys here are Buyer’s references to “intent of Congress” and “core constituency.” By rejecting the “intent of Congress” when they passed legislation defining benefits and eligibility Buyer is telling us Congress was wrong and he is going to change it. By referring to the VA’s “core constituency” as “disabled and indigent veterans” he is eliminating veterans who do not fall into those categories. This is just plain absurd! And it is wrong! As Buyer continues to redefine who is really a veteran here is some of what’s at stake. The bipartisan Veterans’ Disability Benefits Commission will hold its first meeting soon. The Commission will review whether Congress went too far by allowing concurrent receipt of military retirement and VA disability payments. Also on the table is a change in the way disability ratings are determined and a restructuring of the definition of “service-connected.” Buyer says he cannot guarantee veterans who currently have disability ratings that they will be exempt from Commission findings. Buyer also wants the Commission to consider offering lump-sum payments to veterans with current disability ratings of 20 percent or less. These “cash now” settlements would deny veterans the right to pursue any compensation claims in the future. A veteran with a progressive condition, one that causes degenerative disability with age, would have no right to further compensation. What’s really on the table when it comes to redefining a veteran and available benefits? Buyer says, “I think everything should be on the table.” Everything! Buyer is even suggesting that service-connected disabilities be combat-related only. This would eliminate treatment and compensation for injuries received while on active duty but not directly related to combat. Buyer also took aim at the veterans’ service organizations saying their view that all veterans should have access to VA healthcare abandons values like duty and sacrifice. He chided the service organizations for using inflammatory rhetoric. “I asked them to be very careful with the words they select because…they have an impact all over the country. It is upsetting to me when someone refers to veterans as whiney,” Buyer stated. Well, there you have it in his own words. The chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee calling our service organizations “whiney” and accusing them of abandoning values like duty and sacrifice. It would be easy to dismiss Buyer as part of some lunatic fringe on Capital Hill trying to stick it to veterans. But that is not the case. Buyer speaks for the majority in Congress who speak for the current administration. And, Buyer is the one guilty of inflammatory rhetoric. Demeaning our service organizations and their attempts to preserve veterans’ benefits is a slap in the face to ALL veterans. Our service organizations have, in the past, often done too little too late. Sometimes we wondered where they were as the VA budget took hit after hit. Now they find themselves in the position of doing what they were meant to do and being castigated for it. Fellow veterans, if this is not a call to action, I don’t know what is. We cannot allow Congress to redefine who is a veteran. We cannot allow Congress to restructure veterans’ benefits and reshape the definitions of disability. We have worked too hard for too long to receive proper recognition for our service to our country. It’s time to put severe pressure on Congress. Recently 400 disabled veterans did just that when they jammed Committee hearings, booing and jeering Buyer and others who want to cut benefits. This new level of activism must increase if we are to preserve our benefits and guarantee a properly funded VA for the veterans of the future. In 1789 President George Washington said, “The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional as to how they perceive veterans of earlier wars and how they were treated and appreciated by this country.” If we do nothing now we will only be able to say that we did nothing.

  14. Interesting pictures. It would be nice to find a resource / site where ALL opposition to the Iraq war could be found. And, it would be very desirable that Bush and Company could be impeached. I don’t think that is going to happen — gutless politicians! But, one never knows!

I Don’t know, but someone said; “all of the above.” There is also a theory, that Mexico has invented a new invisible banana peel that made the United States beauty queen fall down, because of the expensive wicked Immigration new laws.     5/29/07 I heard this: “For too long the people of Darfur have suffered at the hands of a government that is complicit in the bombing, murder and rape of innocent civilians,” the president said. “My administration has called these actions by their rightful name: Genocide. “The world has a responsibility to put an end to it,” Bush said.
    Two days ago this happened; To the east, in Paktika province, U.S.-coalition warplanes targeted a compound Sunday that also contained a mosque and a madrassa, or Islamic school, resulting in the death of seven boys ages 10 to 16.
    Paktika Gov. Akram Akhpelwak said there normally is strong coordination between the government and international forces but said he was not told of the missile strike beforehand.
    Authorities are working with foreign forces “to have better coordination and to not have these misunderstandings, but today we had a misunderstanding and the people will be unhappy,” Akhpelwak told The Associated Press by telephone. “We will go to the area and discuss the issue with the people and apologize to the people.”
    Coalition troops had “surveillance on the compound all day and saw no indications there were children inside, said Maj. Chris Belcher, a coalition spokesman. He accused the militants of not letting the children leave the compound.
    “If we knew that there were children inside the building, there was no way that that air strike would have occurred,” said Sgt. 1st Class Dean Welch, another coalition spokesman.

    Woe to him who says to wood, “Awake!” to dumb stone, “Arise!” Can such a thing give oracles? See, it is overlaid with gold and silver, but there is no life breath in it.
