Why can’t we hear more of this from actual Democratic candidates, not just fictional ones. But this exchange between Matthew Santos, a Democrat, and Arnold Vinnick, a Republican, stood out on live debate from “The West Wing”:
Santos: I know you like to use that word “liberal” as if it were a crime.
Vinnick: No, I’m sorry. I know I shouldn’t have used that word. I know Democrats think “liberal” is a bad word. So bad you had to change it, didn’t you? What do you call yourselves now? Progressives? Is that it?
Santos: It’s true. Republicans have tried to turn “liberal” into a bad word. Well, liberals ended slavery in this country.
Vinnick: A Republican president ended slavery.
Santos: Yes, a liberal Republican, Senator. What happened to them? They got run out of your party. What did liberals do that was so offensive to the liberal party?
I’ll tell you what they did. Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African Americans the right to vote. Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act. Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act.
What did conservatives do? They opposed every single one of those things. Every one. So when you try to hurl that label at my feet – “liberal” – as if it were something to be ashamed of, something dirty, something to run away from, it won’t work Senator. Because I will pick up that label and I will wear it as a badge of honor.
“..I’ll tell you what they did. Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African Americans the right to vote. Don’t forget things like, the 40 hour week, Child Labor laws, Workers Comp, Anti Trust laws, sadly many of those things have been dismantled, but the point remains. There are few major achievements in the work or social life that were done for business. Business growth and personal growth will always be at odds, the balance between those is what we must strive for. Business doesn’t need government to work for it, the people do. Business isn’t all evil, just those few who take things too far.

What are the fundamental ideas that tie New Deal legislation, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and The Great Society together with Abraham Lincoln such that Abraham Lincoln could be claimed a liberal as that term is used in the United States today?
Being a Liberal in the classic sense is certainly a good thing but sometimes it seems to me that in our day and age the term is used as an synonym for “virtuous” and in this way used as a subtle cudgel against ones political foes. Ever seen those bumper stickers that define what being a Liberal is? “Open minded, caring,” all that… The meaning being “I am Virtuous, and if you don’t agree with the way I see things, you are not.”

How to “Dump Norm†Coleman is by voting for almost
unelectable Jack Shepard in the Republican Senate
Primary
Hello my fellow Minnesotans it is time to “Dump Norm†for Voting for the invasion of
Iraq and for being a cheerleader for the Iraqi War for 5 years, and especially as Chair
of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (PSI), he did not using his powerful
Senate Oversight Committee to investigated a myriad of things like no-bid contracts,
overcharges by contractors, many scandals, and incompetence and many many more
things which if he would have done it would have saved the American Taxpayer Ten’s
if not Hundred’s of Billions of Dollars, that just went missing for example (Americans
lost over 8 Billion Dollars in the first year and a half of the Oil-For-Food-Program and
Senator Norm Coleman did not even bother to see where it went!)
I think it is time to “Dump Norm†because Senator Norm Coleman has been so busy
trying to attack world leaders like Kofi Amman to make a name for himself in the
media that he forgot about helping the Minnesota Voters who sent him to the Senate to
work for Minnesota.
Senator Norm Coleman has not done one thing to help our Minnesota’s economy, our
Minnesota business or our Minnesota’s Workers!
I, Dr. Jack Shepard am running against Senator Norm (Chick-Hawk) Coleman in the
Republican U.S. Senate Primary on Sept. 9, 2008.
My campaign against Norm Coleman is called, “Anyone but Norm†we can “Dump
Norm†if enough Minnesotans old, young, Minnesotans from every walk of life;
Democrats, Independents, Ultra-Independents and other Anti-Norm, and Anti-War
People crossover and vote for almost unelectable Dr. Jack Shepard in the Republican
Primary so Senator Norm Coleman is defeated and does not face Al Franken in the
November General Election.
If Jack Shepard beats Norm (Chick-Hawk) Coleman in the GOP
Primary then Norm Coleman is eliminated from the Minnesota U.S.
Senate Race on September 9, 2008. This will make it impossible for
Norm Coleman to use his massive money advantage over Al Franken
of over 7 million dollars in dirty trick political ads against Al Franken
in the run up to the November General Election.
I call Norm Coleman a Chick-Hawk because he refused to serve in the military during the
Vietnam War when he was called while he has voted to send our sons, daughters, mothers
and fathers to go fight and die in the Iraqi War.
We can “Dump Norm†if Jack Shepard gets more votes then Norm Coleman gets in the
Republican U. S. Senate Primary on September 9, 2008.. Then the name Norm Coleman will
not be listed in the ballot in the Minnesota General Election as the Republican Candidate for
the U.S. Senate.
My web site is http://www.jackshepardforsenate.com is under construction being I only formed the
Jack Shepard for Senate Committee several weeks ago presently I do not have much funding
in my fight to eliminate Norm Coleman from the Minnesota U.S. senate Race in the
September 9, 2008 Republican U.S. Senate Primary so my web site is slowly getting
constructed.
I am already registered with the FEC as a Republican Candidate for the U.S. Senate in
Minnesota: Jack Shepard ID:S2MN00159 and the Jack Shepard for Senate Committee is
register with the FEC ID: C00448118 and the Jack Shepard for Senate Committee has
already filed its first quarter Committee report with the FEC.http://query.nictusa.com/cgi-
bin/fecimg/?S2MN00159
Also for your special interest I also ran against Norm Coleman in the Republican Primary for
the U.S. Senate in 2002 and got over 11,000 votes and 6% of the vote.
Also in 2006 I ran for the U.S. House of Representatives from the 4th Congressional District
and after the over sea votes were counted I received almost 40% of the Republican vote in
the Primary. So I am supported in past Republican Primaries by a high percent of Minnesota
Voters.
With my high name identification with Minnesota voters it makes it very much easier for
Jack Shepard to beat Norm Coleman if you get the word of my and I hope our plan out to
every Anti-Coleman Minnesotan to really organize a massive crossover plan to vote for Jack
Shepard rather then stay at home on September 9, 2008 in the Republican U.S. Senate
Primary so I, Jack Shepard gets more votes then Norm Coleman, and in doing so Norm
Coleman is eliminate from the Minnesota U.S. Senate Race on September 9, 2008.
As for advertising being Norm Coleman has a massive financial advantage over me and Al
Franken because he is busy filling his campaign coffers with millions of dollars in donations
from special interest lobby groups like Big Oil, Big Pharmacy, the Insurance Industry and
from many far right PACs. Coleman’s campaign ended the first quarter period with nearly $7
million dollars on hand, double of what Al Franken has on hand.
Norm Coleman’s donations including mostly donation by special interest groups like on
(10/5/07) Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN) has even received $6,000 from VECO Corp executives
this is an example why Norm is flush money including this VECO Corp. which is dirty money
all the way from an Alaskan Oil Company. Norm likes those out-of-state donations. Norm
Coleman campaign coffers continue to grow because he and his allies beat the out-of-state
donations drum incessantly.
What I do not like is these special interest groups want to get what they paid for from Norm.
That is why I say now is the best time and maybe only time to “Dump Norm†in the
Republican U.S. Senate Primary by voting for Jack Shepard especially so these special
interest groups will not get what they paid Norm millions of dollars for.
To end the Iraqi War it is necessary to get the magic number of 60 U.S. Senators who wish to
end the War in Iraq. If Norm Coleman gets re-elected then it would be impossible to get to
the Magic number of 60 U.S. senator who will vote to end the Iraqi War; that is why we must
stop Norm Coleman from getting re-elected or we can never stop the Iraqi War.
You have to remember it will be easier to eliminate Norm Coleman in his Republican
Primary then the General Election especially if Jesse Ventura runs and splits the liberal
vote.
Obviously being the Jack Shepard for Senate Committee was only created and registered with
the FEC about 2 weeks ago it has almost no money, but what we do not have in Millions of
Dollars which Norm Coleman has collected from in donations from special interest lobby
groups like Big Oil, Big Pharmacy , the insurance industry and from many far right PAC’s we
can make up with work!
We have 5 months to get the word out; so if you do not want that Norm Coleman to win re-
election to the U.S. Senate the first thing to do is start calling your friends who are also
against the re-election of Norm Coleman; then ask them to call their friends all over the
Minnesota to explain the importance of voting for Jack Shepard for the U.S. Senate in the
Republican Primary on September 9, 2008 so Jack Shepard can beat Norm Coleman and
eliminate Norm from the Minnesota U.S. Senate Race.
We must use every method we can think of; by word of mouth, by using the internet, even
printing this page and handing it out at all Democratic or Independent conventions or
meetings throughout the entire State of Minnesota starting today for the next 5 months right
up until the Minnesota Primary Election day which is September 9, 2008.
You the people in Minnesota who do not support the re-election of Norm Coleman to the U.S.
Senate and favour other candidates can make a small donations by clicking http://www.
jackshepardforsenate.com/Donation.html so I can place “Dump Norm†in his Primary
publicity throughout the States; or if you are against the re-election of Norm Coleman to the
U.S. Senate form your own Committees, make your own yard signs, and print your own flyers
to hand them out any and everywhere you can.
You can immediately start spreading the word of our plan that Norm Coleman can more
easily be eliminated from Minnesota’s U.S. Senate Race by voting for Jack Shepard in the
September Republican Primary then the November General Election especially if Jesse
Ventura runs for the U.S. Senate and splits the liberal vote. You have to know that if Jesse
Ventura runs there is no way to stop Norm Coleman from winning re-elected if you let
Senator Norm Coleman win the Republican Primary for the U.S. Senate by beating Jack
Shepard on September 9, 2008.
Working together people from every walk of life; we can completely eliminated Norm
Coleman from the U.S. Senate Race in Minnesota only by a massive crossover vote for the
almost unelectable Jack Shepard in the Republican Primary for the U.S. Senate by
Democrats, Independent, Ultra- Independents and other anti-Norm for Senate people though
out Minnesota.
Politicians like Senator Norm Coleman are a lot like diapers they should be exchanged
frequently and regularly for the same reason!
We have 5 months to get the word out, what we do not have in money we can makeup with
work and talk.
Then all Norm Coleman’s huge campaign coffers from Big Oil, Big Pharmacy, the insurance
industry and the far right PACs; Norm will not be able to use in the General Election against
Al Franken and just as important these Big Oil, Big Pharmacy, the insurance industry and
the far right PACs will not get what they paid from Norm because Norm Coleman’s name will
not even be on the Ballot as the Republican Candidate for the U.S. Senate in the Minnesota
General Election.
The Republicans have crossed over many times and in many states to eliminate stronger
candidates and pick weaker or almost unelectable candidates like Jack Shepard before; so
what I am doing is very common.
The “Dump Norm†plan will work and it is the best and really only chance of eliminating
Norm Coleman in this election is in the Republican Primary by voting for Jack Shepard; so
all we have to do is get this Plan to eliminate Norm (Chicken-Hawk) Coleman in his Primary
to be well known throughout Minnesota in the next 5 months.
Then on the September 9, 2008 so enough Minnesota voters will join a massive crossover vote
so Jack Shepard defeats Norm Coleman in the Minnesota Republican Primary between
Senator Norm Coleman and almost unelectable Dr. Jack Shepard.
Being in all reality Norm Coleman could have been a U.S. Senator represent New York for all
that he did to help the Minnesota economy, the Minnesota farmers, and the Minnesota
workers so if you get the message to vote for Jack Shepard against Norm Coleman to
eliminate and Dump Norm there will be enough votes of people who do not wish to take any
chances of Senator Norm Coleman getting re-elected.
So if you do not wish Norm Coleman to win re-election you better start organizing and
spreading the word immediately. Then many many Minnesotans will come out and crossover
and vote in the Republican Primary for almost unelectable Jack Shepard rather then staying
at home so then Jack Shepard will beat and eliminate Norm Coleman from the Minnesota U.
S. Senate Race.
We do not have the pallets of greenbacks that Norm has but we can call our friends, post our
plan every where, use the internet, make yard signs, write letters to editor and do everything
possible to let everyone in Minnesota know all you have to do to dump Senator Norm
Coleman from the Minnesota U.S. Senate Race is by voting for almost unelectable Jack
Shepard in the Republican Primary so he defeats Norm Coleman in the U.S. Senate
Republican Primary.
The pallets of greenbacks Norm got from Big Oil, Big Pharmacy, the insurance industry and
the far right PACs; will not be used in the General Election against Al Franken because if
Norm Coleman is beaten by Jack Shepard in the Republican U.S. Senate Primary then Norm
Coleman’s name will not even be on the Minnesota General Election Ballot for the United
States Senate.
With a massive crossover vote for Jack Shepard you can easily beat Norm Coleman on
September 9, 2008, which is the only way to guarantee that Norm Coleman does not beat Al
Franken and gets re-elected to the U.S. Senate in the November General Election.
Dr. Jack Shepard is running against Senator Norm Coleman for the Republican Nomination
for U.S. Senate in the Minnesota Republican Primary to be held on September 9, 2008. http:

What’s wrong with a leader who’s both liberal and conservative? Seems to me that person would be the “Uniter” America needs–unlike Hillary who only cares about Hillary; or Barack Hussein Obama who has zero experience and qualifications to be POTUS, but the feeble-minded who’ve been digitally lobotomized by the wild fantasies of NBC shows like “West Wing” don’t care about that; they just like the way his empty, substance-free rhetoric sounds–just as the Germans did almost eighty years ago with another upstart who had zero experience and qualifications to be a leader–and they’ve already shown they’ll destroy anyone (e.g. Moveon.org vs Gibson and Stephanopoulous) who doesn’t throw themselves at the feet of the Obamessiah.

Liberal? A bad word? Well … yes, it is. But it is more than that. It is a “kinder and gentler” label that our fellow travelers in the American press adopted for “Socialist”. To the American proletariat Socialist is synonymous with “Communist”. Keep in mind, the American proletariat is too stupid to manage their own lives. For example, a significant number of them can’t even find their state capitol on a map. So yes, it is very probable the same proletarians think Socialism equals Communism. Liberalism and Socialism is the same political philosophy, which is that a compassionate, literate, highly educated (usually at prestigious universities), class of elitists know how to better manage the daily lives of the proletariat than they do. Why? Because “We Careâ„¢”. This is how we have instructed our fellow travelers in the mainstream media to sell it…. as “compassionate”. This segues into my next point. Liberalism (i.e. Socialism) is a psychology. Liberals/Socialist have a truly heartfelt need to demonstrate acts of great kindness … usually via the government purse. You really must read Eric Alan Beltt’s little editorial on “Liberalism is a Psychology” at http://www.opinioneditorials.com/freedomwriters/ebeltt_20040805.html . It is a fascinating read. Mr. Beltt makes some very valid points. For one, we the Liberals/Socialists elitists/ruling class feel a greater sense of “moral superiority”. And … flankly, I agree! We are morally superior. This moral superiority makes us feel good about ourselves. Sort of like a form of “intellectual masturbation”. It feels good. But it doesn’t do a whole lot. And the good feeling we get about ourselves (ego gratification) is fleeting, as evidenced by some of your outlandish comments and tirades that you hurl towards those who post comments here that.
As I have learned through out my days in socialist and revolutionary causes, and now today as a volunteer for my local Democratic Party (i.e. Socialist Party) you must temper your most base emotions with the logical Socialist facts.
At this point in time it is highly unlikely that Pres. Bush and Vice Pres. Cheney will be impeached, I wish you well and hope you continue to keep the dream of a Marxist/Socialist America alive.

John McCandidate has voted against the last ten Veteran’s benefits bills that have come up in the Senate.
“Support the Troops” my ass. This is the sort of hypocrisy that undermines support for GOP candidates by any voter that actually takes the time to study the voting records and policies of their candidates.
There is more than jingoism and fear-mongering for the voters who do more than just let corporate television tell them what to think and who to vote for.
How embarrassing for ABC and the rest of the corporate press was that last Democratic Candidate debate?
Simply pathetic is what it was. How difficult is it to stick to the actual issues?

SOPHOMORIC??????
Mikael,
The Democratic Party is filled with people who were once members of various Socialist organizations. The late Michael Harrington being the most prominent one that comes immediately to mind. The Democratic Party has a very strong connection to the Socialist movement. It’s been this way for decades. I know for sure going back to when Lyndon Johnson was President and I was with the Socialist Party of America. Longer than that actually. If memory serves me, some of the old timers I knew in the old SPA worked with the Democratic Party when FDR was in office.
Mikael, do you ever read about anything other than impeaching this lame duck President? Have you ever bothered to study the history of Socialism in America? How it has, sadly, failed so far? But I feel that is about to change when either Clinton or Obama assume the Presidency. Or are you so tunnel-visioned into this silly impeachment thing that is not… NOT… going to happen? Wake up Mikael!!!! There is an entire world of brother and sister leftists out here amongst the elite. Join us! We know what is best for the American proletariat! So do you! Help make America a better America by making it a Socialist America. A “perfect” Socialist society. Look at Canada, Great Britain, and Australia! If they can form great Socialist societies then ……. why can’t we in America?
Good Luck to you young man!

WCW was formed by a variety of people, some of whom are communists, some of whom are Christians, some are Democrats, some are Greens. Members and associates around the nation are of all different backgrounds, religions and political affiliations.
Neither Debra Sweet nor Bob Parson, two of the primary leaders, are communists. Cofounder Sunsara Taylor is a member of the Revolutionary Communist Party. Our local chapter of World Can’t Wait in Minneapolis included Christians, atheists, Jews, Muslims, communists, Democrats, Greens, Libertarians, even recovering Republicans.
The tired, old McCarthyite attempt to disparage World Can’t Wait as being a communist front is:

… it is called populism. It is a political philosophy by which the needs of the people WHOSE TAX DOLLARS PAY FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO EXIST are paramount. The majority get the government to work for them instead of the rich minority buying elections and getting the government to work for them tax-free as in Bushie-land.
It is taxation WITH REPRESENTATION.
It is also known as democracy… perhaps you’ve heard of it?
In this radical system, war is only considered as a last resort rather than an economic sledgehammer to pummel other nations into line.

Populism, the poor man’s socialism.
Democracy is great for electing representatives. But a tyranny by one person or a million is still tyranny.
The fact is our country was founded as a Constitutional Republic with democratically elected representatives and the framers of the Constitution saw democracy as an evil that would tear society apart. Your way of seeing things: “The majority get the government to work for them instead of the rich minority buying elections and getting the government to work for them tax-free as in Bushie-land.” – is the typical Left-wing narrative. The rich have a stranglehold on power and the government is just the superstructure of class power.

Margaret,
You say you are “for human freedom and liberty” and support “Constitutional Republicanism”, but you support an administration that has waged a comprehensive war against Constitutional freedoms and liberties at home and against general freedoms and liberties abroad – all to the benefit of crony corporate profiteers.
There is a huge chasm between what you say you support and how that is expressed in your political leanings.
I understand support of Republicanism as personified by the likes of Arlen Specter, Charlie Crist and others, but do not understand support of the NeoCon disease that has infiltrated the GOP and holds our nation’s highest values hostage.
How is it that so many NeoCon trolls on this site complain about welfare and other social support systems that take care of the needs of citizens – calling it socialism and communism – yet don’t bat an eye to oppose corporate welfare that bails out banks that make bad investment decisions, airlines that can’t make ends meet, billionaire sports team owners that want free stadiums to profit from, etc.?
Democrats: Oppose corporate welfare, support citizen welfare. Understand tax income needed to pay for it.
Republicans: Oppose citizen welfare, support corporate welfare. Oppose taxes needed to pay for it.
