Kucinich puts off effort to impeach Bush

After promising last week that he’d mark President Bush’s final “State of the Union” speech today by introducing articles of impeachment against Bush, Cleveland Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich announced he’s postponing the effort.

Kucinich said he met with members of the House Judiciary Committee after making last week’s impeachment pledge on the House of Representatives floor, and came away “hopeful there will be an inquiry by the Judiciary Committee.”

“I will give them the opportunity to proceed before introducing articles of impeachment,” Kucinich said in a statement issued by his office. The House Judiciary Committee’s spokeswoman did not respond to The Plain Dealer’s request for comment.

Last year, Kucinich introduced a measure to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney that has collected 24 cosponsors. His November effort to bring the matter before the full House of Representatives won support from Republicans who wanted to embarrass House Democratic leaders, but was eventually referred to the Judicary Committee.

Kucinich told The Plain Dealer editorial board last week that nine members of the House Judiciary Committee favor his bid to impeach Cheney. But that’s shy of a majority; the committee has 23 Democrats and 17 Republicans.

“I do not believe that there will be an impeachment this year — I don’t think that will happen – but I do think that the questions relating to an inquiry of both the president and the vice president are important so that our nation has a real understanding of the effort that was made, a consistent effort, to mislead the people into supporting a war,” Kucinich said.

  1. The current congress serves themselves and NOT the people! The Impeachment issue is the proof.

  2. All he had to do was file the bill and I would have supported him. We all admired him for speaking out and demanding Impeachment. Then at the last minute, he showed his true colors. He abandoned the people that worked to get him elected!
He is more concerned about himself then the American people. He is just like rest in Washington. I feel we have been betrayed!! This makes me feel sad.

  3. Andrea, I did the same for George McGovern in the seventies and even hitch hiked from California to DC to join 250,000 other people to protest the Viet Nam war. I swam in the White House fountain on the 4th of July wearing nothing but a Nixon mask. I hitch hiked over 15 states supporting George McGovern, without a dime living on the kindness of strangers. I even ate lunch in the kitchen of the Watergate. AS for Dennis Kucinich, I did call all my friends, I ran a free banner ad on 5 domains, getting an average of 80k hits a week each and I put “Dennis Kucinich for President” in vinyl letters on the rear window of my car, so you can’t say I didn’t support the man. I am also running free banner ads for Ron Paul, so I’m not that partisan, I’m just looking for someone to restore the Constitution. Dennis would of still won my vote.

If you compared the crimes of Bush to the crimes Nixon, Nixon would look like a girl scout. Bush’s 7 year crime spree hinges on treason. If this article is correct, Dennis stated “I do not believe that there will be an impeachment this year — I don’t think that will happen” then that sounds to me like he’s giving up. If Dennis realizes that this is 2008 and he doesn’t believe that there will be an impeachment this year, then he’s like most people in congress who are more worried about getting reelected than the Constitution !! On Friday in front of congress, Dennis sounded like the man I supported and congress admonished him for speaking the truth. On Monday he didn’t begin impeachment against Bush and he sounded like a whipped pup, more worried about reelection than anything. If he would of at least filed the impeachment bill against Bush I would have continued to support him, but now I just can not !!

  4. They would expose the crimes of the Clinton crime family. They are numerous. The Clintons are in bed with the Bush crime family. Google Bush/Clinton crime family. Hillary is scared of losing.

  5. The Democratic party is putting impeachment off due to the back lash that
would occur (from the Repubs) on the election of candidate Clinton, should she win the nomination. The Clinton’s think all hell would break loose in the
press and elsewhere and hubby Bill would be a great target all over again. Yea
the CLINTONS are holding up impeachment.

  6. Kucinich heard something from Judiciary Committee members that led him to believe that an inquiry in depth will take place. Dennis would not have put it on the shelf without feeling confident that a better plan is in the works.

    Let’s hope they aren’t playing him…

  7. Oh you whiners! Where have you been when this brave man was fighting for his life in the presidential race? Did you canvas your neighborhoods, phone everyone you know and explain his issues until you had no voice left? Well I did and so did a lot of other good folks while we watched what was done to him in total disbelief…

Don’t you dare call Dennis Kucinich a coward! I have copied the message I sent to Wexler today after I rec another one of those “I’m so wonderful and look at what I’m doing for you” things.

    Dear Congressman Wexler,

As much as I greatly appreciate your support of impeachment for Cheney, I would feel much better about you if you at least mentioned Congressman Kucinich and his battle for reelection! He is the one that introduced these impeachment bills that you, and too few other Democrats in your committee, are just now starting to stand up for! And why isn’t there one word in this that tells us Congressman Kucinich is introducing a bill today to impeach our current president?

Again, I do appreciate your efforts in the Judiciary Committee for impeachment – but PLEASE do not abandon the man who initiated this on behalf of all Americans!

    Sincerely,
    Andrea Radich

  8. Open Letter to: Dennis Kucinich

Why did you bail on Impeachment? Did they get to you, or were you already in their pockets? I trusted you, you said you would Impeach, you said you would investigate 911, you said you would end the war, you said you would protect the constitution, but you turned out to be a coward like most of congress. I’m glad I didn’t waist my vote on you!!

    No Thanks

  9. Looks like “The Bush Goliath” has slayed our “David”, instead of the other way around. It’s awfully hard to remain optimistic.
Everyone should read Naomi Klein’s THE SHOCK DOCTRINE, to fully understand what our government is really all about.
