Press Release from Allen Lang of
World Can’t Wait Youth and Students
Students at UC – Santa Barbara have initiated a one day student strike against the war on February 15th. Students at Columbia University, UC – Berkeley, Sonoma State, Occidental College, Fordham University, San Francisco State, University of North Carolina – Greensboro; and Columbia College (Chicago) are planning rallies, walk-outs, and/or strikes on their campuses February 15th.
February 15th marks the 4th anniversary of when millions of people came out around the world to protest Bush’s planned war on Iraq. In the wake of Bush’s escalation of a war that has already caused the deaths of 655,000 Iraqis and over 3,000 US soldiers, and threats to attack Iran, this student strike is urgently needed, and must spread to other campuses quickly. Now is not the time to be waiting for Congress to make slow incremental steps towards some eventual phased withdrawal. Now is the time for millions of people to get out and demand an end to the war immediately and the Bush administration be impeached for war crimes.

‘beansworth’,
Your predicament echoes the situation of many students and workers across the nation who want to make a difference but who can’t afford to take the Action Steps being called for. There have been events I really have wanted to travel to support, such as the recent protest in D.C. but I couldn’t because I was under contract commitment for those dates long before the events were scheduled.
I suggest this:
1). Devote the time you can afford to letting everyone know about the walk-out over the next couple of days.
2). Check with your Professor in advance to see if he/she will support it and allow for some discussion at the beginning of class about the event.
3). Make a statement during class expressing your solidarity with those who do walk out and your frustration with your situation not being able to join them.
You may even get your professor to excuse class early to join whatever protest your campus plans. Most are very much in agreement with the anti-war and anti-Bush/Cheney movement.
Stay in touch!
In my sociology class, we had a discussion of why students today are not as politically active as students during the 1960’s. Very interesting. Unfortunately for me, I have a class that only meets on Thursdays. If I miss it 3 times, I will fail or have to drop. If I drop the class, I will be down to 6 hours for the semester, and so I will lose my financial aid. If I lose the financial aid, I can’t afford tuition, so I’ll have to drop all my classes. It’s too bad political activism is a luxury.
If or should I say when King George II starts WWIII by attacking Iran (the drums are gettin’ louder everyday) The whole nation needs to go a strike but not just for a day…. week or even a month long strike might do the trick. GWB needs to go before he can start WWIII.
