In 10 U.S. states, either this year or last year or both, the state legislature has introduced and considered, though not yet passed, a bill to petition the U.S. House of Representatives to impeach Bush and Cheney. The question, of course, is what in the heck is wrong with the other 40 states? We can’t find a single state legislator with the decency to uphold the U.S. Constitution and at least introduce a resolution to impeach? Where are the states that created the Constitution? Where are Massachusetts and Virginia? What’s holding up New York? Where in the world is Oregon? Is this all the pressure we can muster in the cause of justice?

But let’s give credit where it’s due. These 10 states have acted: CA, HI, IL, MN, MO, WA, VT, NM, WI, TX. These 10 legislators who’ve taken the lead should be drafted to run for Congress (except for Ellison, whom we’ve already elected to Congress): Les Ihara, Jr. HI; Lon Burnam TX; Gerald Ortiz y Pino NM; Eric Oemig WA; Paul Koretz CA; Daryl Pillsbury VT; Karen Yarbrough IL; Jamilah Nasheed MO; Frank Boyle WI; and Keith Ellison MN. Special credit goes to Oemig and Ortiz y Pino who have come close to passing their bills.

  1. Tom, it may be easier to just let the President finish his term, but in the meantime, how much more damage will he do? He may be considered a lame duck, but since he completely disregards Constitutional Law and Congressional edicts, he could attempt almost anything, including removing term limits (please, no one read this aloud…he might overhear!), starting another war, reinstituting the draft, not to mention the continuing downswing in our economy and loss of allies worldwide. He has already declared he has no intention of pulling out of Iraq, meaning unless we get someone in the White House who will, thousands more Americans will die needlessly. It will already take years, possibly decades, to repair the damage he has already done, and the sooner we can get started the better it will be for everyone. He should have been impeached years ago! As much as I would like to see him criminally locked up, I would be satisfied by getting him out of the White House, out of power, and out of reach of any of his cronies.

  2. Tom,

There is a good chance that at least one of these states will get it to the floor of their Congress. It is difficult to know which one has the best chance, but New Mexico came very, very close. Vermont has the strongest backing among residents. In each of these states the majority of constituents favor impeachment. The only question remaining is whether the leadership will go along with the will of the people. They are beginning to realize that if they don’t, they can kiss their cushy seats of power goodbye as well by the next election cycle.

This President and his administration have done so much to destroy our international reputation, impeachment and removal from office of Bush & Cheney (for starters) would be a huge leap in the direction of restoring respect and trust in America across the globe.

We are a nation of laws (or claim to be). This President has lied about breaking the law, was caught lying, then justified the illegal activity after the fact and pledged to continue it (FISA laws broken – warrantless spying on Americans).

Impeachment and removal from office is not “deposing” the President and Vice President, it is the legal political means by which the founders of the American Democratic Republic laid out to protect ourselves from this exact situation – an Executive running amok in complete disregard for checks and balances and accountability under the law.

The Supreme Court ruled that the Bushies’ defining of prisoners of war as “enemy combatants” was unlawful. This decision, by definition, made them war criminals. The passing of the Military Commissions Act is the only thing that is temporarily protecting them from being held accountable for that.

The amount of damage Bush has already done to this country and to the world make it clear that the world cannot afford another month and a half with him in power, much less another year and a half.

  3. Give me a break. You think any of these 10 states will actually vote on this? In each and every case, it is merely a symbolic gesture. The Dems won in ’06 and they’ll win in ’08. Why not shut up and enjoy that. Bush is a lame duck who’ll be out of office soon. It would hurt our country more, on the international scene to depose one of our leaders rather than just to let him quietly finish his term.
