Tim Griffin, a former protege of White House political guru Karl Rove who replaced one of the controversially fired U.S. attorneys late last year, will resign his post as the top federal prosecutor in Arkansas on Friday, various news outlets in the state have reported.

Aides to members of the Arkansas congressional delegation confirmed the move to local media late Wednesday and early Thursday morning.

Griffin worked under Rove in the White House before Justice Department officials tapped him to replace Bud Cummins, one of the seven U.S. attorneys dismissed on the same day last December, sparking an evolving scandal that has embroiled Justice and the White House for much of the year and prompted numerous calls for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resign.
