Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty came to Congress Thursday looking for a do-over.Former White House liaison Monica Goodling called into question McNulty’s prior statements regarding the firing of at least eight US Attorneys for allegedly political reasons when she testified before Congress last month.
Testifying before a House subcommittee, McNulty sought to distance himself from deep involvement in the attorney firing scandal. He acknowledged approving the prosecutors who were to be dismissed, but insisted he remained out of the loop for much of the discussion.
McNulty was brought in at the end of deliberations, he said, and he was unaware of how the list of attorneys was created and who within the White House had added names to it.
