Members of a Senate panel indicated their support Thursday for Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute as the nation’s “war czar,” but questioned whether the new post would make a difference in Iraq.
“How much more time should we give after four years in Iraq?” asked Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Armed Services Committee.
“Baghdad is burning while the Iraqi politicians avoid accepting responsibility for their country’s future,” said Levin, D-Mich. “I believe the only chance to get Iraqi politicians to stand up is when they know we are going to begin to stand down.”
