Man fights ticket for putting anti-Bush sign on public property

Kevin Egler, a 45-year-old teacher, is fighting a ticket he received for posting a sign that said “Impeach Bush” in a public garden, according to The Plain Dealer.

The Record-Courier says Egler was accused of “advertising on public property” and faces a $125 fine if convicted of putting the sign on public land near an intersection in Kent, Ohio.

Egler tells the Plain-Dealer “that when he was stopped in Kent, he asked the police officer how his sign differed from Realtors posting signs on public property saying “This way to the house for sale.” He said the officer asked, ‘You don’t know the difference?’ but never explained what it might be.”

A hearing was scheduled for today, with a trial to follow on Aug. 16.

  1. Dave,

You are partially informed yet hold very strong opinions about this case.

The sign was placed no differently than the others as far as I know.

Are you putting your life on the line to destroy the encroaching fascism in America or are you just “whining” about the techniques employed by those who are?

What are you doing? Anything? Anything at all?

    Mikael

  2. I can tell you the difference: The rules for posting signs require them to be within a certain distance of the road, or off of public property altogether. Realtors are fined and their signs confiscated all the time because they were unaware of the local laws regarding sign placement.

This case isn’t fascism. Calling it fascism reflects poorly on this site and dishonors the memories of the real victims of fascism as well as the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to destroy it.

You want to protest? Great! Bush, et al, don’t deserve their positions for a wide variety of reasons. Acting like your actions are above the law isn’t going to do it. Civil Disobedience works IN COORDINATION WITH traditional political movements. Without a strong official movement to support it, civil disobedience is nothing more than criminal activity, and frankly, everybody is sick of crime.

Protest in a suit and tie. Act like the boss of the government that you are instead of like a spoiled brat. Act like a citizen and a patriot instead of a whiny hippie, and you might accomplish your goals.
