Published at Kay’s Blue Racine — Featured speaker John Nichols didn’t fail to please the audience of over 300 with facts on what impeachment means and facts on why Bush is in an impeachable position along with Cheney. He laid out the background of impeachment from the constitution and history of why it was such a prominent part of our Constitution (6 separate references to it in that document) referring to the founders’ fear of the “creep of monarchy”. Nichols’ ability to speak plainly so that a very complex political mechanism like impeachment is understandable deserves praise in itself. Once he lays out the case for impeachment it’s a hard issue to argue against. And, I’m not an impeachment person. I’m also not an easy sell on political ideas. But, there was little for me to disagree with by the time he was done.
Another featured speaker, Theological Ethics Professor Daniel Maguire of Marquette University, also gave an exceptionally well laid out case for starting and investigation called impeachment. He listed 15 “ugly facts that reek to the high heavens of “high crimes and misdemeanors”.quote I was fortunate enough to have Professor Maguire give me a copy of his remarks and plan to post them in full on another page as soon as possible and I have another writer that will go over them in more detail here later. This man was mesmerizing for me to listen to. Thank goodness he gave me his notes because there was no taking them for me while he was speaking.
Another speaker, Martha Love-chair of the Milwaukee county dem party, recited the state party’s resolution submitted by the 4th CD of the party requesting impeachment of Bush and others. She encouraged the audience by showing that democrats do care about impeachment contrary to capital “D” Democrats in high offices.
Annette Zeidler, daughter of Mayor Frank Zeidler, gave an empassioned speech talking about the erosion of our rights, the need to have a responsive government and high ethical standards at every level of government.
There were a couple of other speakers and not to diminish what they had to say, I want to stop here and ‘blog’ about what last night showed me, what I learned and how I felt while I was there. Later on we will be talking about those speakers but for now……
What a difference a few hours and more radical topic makes.
First off I have to say that I was appalled by the fact that no one in the media of the Milwaukee area showed up to cover this event. Not only were there more people in attendance here than at UWM it was open to the general public and held in City Hall. Yeah, Dean’s a big speaker in politics, but this night included some pretty interesting and well respected people too. Nichols is more published than Dean. And, importantly, local people.
