DailyKos, Rep. Wexler — Dear Friends,
We have been following the diaries on Daily Kos and elsewhere with great interest and excitement, as it has been the Netroots that has truly given weight to our call for Impeachment Hearings. Without you, I believe we would have been completely ignored by the mainstream press. Thanks to your calls and letters to publications, we have started to break through the mainstream press, and the pace of signatures has climbed back up.
I have been encouraging those that have already signed to continue to contact their representatives in Congress and encourage them to support our effort. There is no doubt in my mind that whether I go back with 200,000 or 250,000 – the message will be clear to my colleagues: there is massive support for hearings, and there will be increased anger and disillusionment if we don’t address these abuses of power soon.
I think it’s important to point out that while there may not currently be 218 votes in support of actual impeachment, it’s premature to think that support would not be there AFTER hearings.

The whole purpose of hearings is to investigate and verify credible allegations of wrongdoing. Let us remember that it wasn’t until after hearings began that the Watergate tapes emerged. Who knows what will be uncovered when we explore the evidence already on the table? Who knows what support will emerge when the truth comes out?
This administration has obstructed our agenda since we took the majority. There is little reason to think that if we avoid hearings, we will suddenly find ourselves in an easier position. In fact, there is good cause to believe the opposite – that if we avoid hearings, we will STILL be obstructed. Such an outcome would be tragic.
Lastly, there are those that suggest that there is too little time to conduct hearings. This is a dangerous idea, as it signals to future presidents that after the third year of their term, they’re effectively immune from serious inquiry. No President or Vice President should have such immunity. The Constitution does not include a statute of limitations.

We’ve been trying Nikolai!!! But January 19th, 2009 is NOT too late for impeachment. This is about precedent – whether or not we, the American people will allow this to stand unchallenged.
It’s just too bad this didn’t get rolling a couple of years ago. It would have been sweet to have had the time to get this movement growing bigtime before 2009 and to be able to watch cheney, bush and their ilk squirm.
PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW. IF YOU HAVEN’T SIGNED YET. DO SO NOW! TELL TEN FRIENDS TO DO SO AS WELL!!!
Hitler was voted into power with as little as 37 percent of a democratically primeval German electorate that was more distressed, deceived, and confused by its WW I losses and the financial ruin of the Great Depression than any American today—notwithstanding the deceit and censorship of the mainstream corporate media. Yet the World has for the past seventy years unceasingly vilified that European nation for its conduct in WW II and the Holocaust it procured! You think the World despises us NOW?—the most affluent, educated, and most advanced democracy in history? Just wait!
Just imagine a more virulently irreparable reproach suffered by every American throughout the coming century and beyond for voting in our own Hitler—not once, but TWICE—with 50 percent—maybe more—of the American electorate! Unless we reform or otherwise counter our truly evil, misguided, and incorporated “other half,â€â€”that other 50 percent, that Rethug vote and their demented influence, THESE CRIMINAL SUPPORTERS OF A SEPARATE, IMMORAL UNIVERSE of torture, extraordinary rendition, nuclear contamination, defrauded democracy, ecological degradation, climate disintegration, and that vicious, condescending and intractable neoconservative arrogance of self-righteousness that has risked or destroyed our laws, our Constitution, our freedoms and our human rights, WILL—far worse than Germany—BE JUDGED BOTH COLLECTIVELY WITH OUR CHILDREN AND AS AN ETERNALLY INDELIBE CURSE ON OUR LEGACY AS A PEOPLE!
Representative Wexler I salute you with the highest respect. How rare people like you are in our government, or what is left of it. Unraveling the crimes of Cheney and the entire Republican crime machine will likely expose a criminal and tratorous enterprise which history will look upon as one of the greatest threats to everything on this Earth. The Oil/Military/Pharma/Wallstreet grip on our media and government combined with organized religious fundamentalism in this country are dire threats to our democracy. Fight now. Fight hard. Never give into them. Cheers!
If the Democratic controlled Congress does not investigate and then impeach Cheney and later on George W Bush, the message is loud and clear to all future administrations of either party:
“You have free reign to do whatever you want, the will of the people doesn’t matter at all, and the Constitution is an annoying scrap of paper that can be circumvented.”
These hearings should not be held to score partisan political points or as pay back for the Clinton impeachment of 1998, rather, they MUST BE HELD to preserve the Constitution of the United States of America. This is whether or not we live in a democracy anymore.
What Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid don’t understand about the serious nature of the Bush/Cheney crimes I can’t fathom, unless they were somehow in on it from the beginning. If that is the case, they too must be proscuted to the fullest extent of the law.
