May Day Impeachment March

Sunny skies greeted the Impeach for Peace group members as they gathered at Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis to participate in the annual May Day parade, sponsored by the Heart of the Beast Puppet Theatre.

World Can’t Wait demonstrators marched in the “Join-in” portion of the parade wearing orange scrubs and black hoods, chained together in representation of the many political detainees that have been imprisoned, tortured and separated from their families by this country’s current administration. The group was accompanied by several demonstrators, including the young son of the founder of the St. Paul chapter of World Can’t Wait, wearing a sign demanding that Bush resign from office.

Meanwhile, other demonstrators provided information on the administration’s crimes and impeachment-related actions steps at the Impeach for Peace table. Over 80 people signed our contact list. Although the group had hoped to collect donations, this was against the rules of the May Day event. However, the interest generated was above and beyond the group’s expectations. Impeach for Peace was invited to table at another event in late June, where donations can be made.

The experience went well for a first-time outing, and some lessons were learned. The group will attempt to secure a tent to cover the table, and provide paperweights to prevent forms from being blown around by summer breezes.
