Congressional Aide: Conyers Impeachment Talk Just Rhetoric, A Red Herring

Excerpt from a Cybercast News Service article:

Conyers admitted, however, that he was “struggling” with a decision on whether to try impeaching Bush before the election. The Judiciary Committee, which Conyers chairs, would ordinarily conduct an impeachment inquiry, if there is one, and approve any Articles of Impeachment for consideration by the full House.

(In 1998, the Republican-controlled Judiciary Committee conducted impeachment proceedings against then-President Bill Clinton. Rep. Conyers says that he introduced the first resolution to impeach Richard Nixon, and he also wanted to impeach President Ronald Reagan over the invasion of Grenada, introducing a resolution to that effect in Nov. 1983.)

Swanson (After Downing Street Organizer) isn’t the only one who doubts Conyers will actually attempt to impeach Bush. A former Conyers aide, who asked not to be named, told Cybercast News Service he agreed with Swanson’s analysis. “He will never do it,” said the former aide. “This is just rhetoric, and it is not part of the agenda. It’s mostly just a red herring to the Republicans.”

We have created a text printed on red cardstock (you can get 4 cards to an 8 1/2″ by 11″ sheet if you’re careful with the word processor). Our heading (underlined) says: RED ALERT: CONSTITUTION BREACHED! and is followed by this text:
Dear Congressperson–/You took an oath to uphold and defend the U.S./ Constitution. Bush and Cheney have repeatedly/ violated the Constitution by wagiing an illegal, immoral/ war in Iraq, denying legal rights to detainees and/ approving torture; using “signing statements” to/ invalidate laws of Congress; breaking longstanding/ treaties; conducting illegal surveillance; and generally/ acting as if they were above and beyond the law./
If Bush and Cheney are not held accountable/ how can we hold executives accountable for future/ abuses? You’re leaving a loaded gun in the Oval Office/ for another president to use at his or her discretion!/ Repudiate these policies through IMPEACHMENT!
    AN OUTRAGED PATRIOT: ____________________________________

  6. To all those that make excuses for not impeaching:
Do you want to send the message to our future leaders that subverting the laws of this nation is acceptable behavior for an elected official who swore to uphold the US Constitution and “protect our nation against all enemies, foreign and domestic”?
How egregious do the crimes have to become before the electorate is willing to enforce the sanctions provided in the US Constitution for the benefit of a government of the people for the people?
Not impeaching Bush and his cabal only sets the standard of misdeeds higher for future administrations. How far are you going to allow the next regime to go before getting active?
If you wait long enough, protest will have been outlawed, imprisonment of dissenters will be even more common and the tools provided for by the US Constitution, a document referred to as “just a goddamn piece of paper.” by George W. Bush, will be indeed reduced to such.
If it stinks, it’s time to clean up! Start with Cheney!
