New Hampshire legislature tables bill to impeach Bush

The bill, HR24, was tabled Wednesday on a roll call vote of 227 to 95. Action could be taken on the bill later in the session.

Democrat Betty Hall of Brookline sponsored the measure.

A legislative committee voted in February not to recommend it.

  1. “A vote to impeach in the House in the fading days of fascism would at least repudiate that regime and tell the world Americans do not share the values of Bush, Cheney, and the neocon cabal. Maybe that is our last best hope, dear friends.”

Alas, I believe even that is a long shot. We can hope, but time will tell, and I am most certainly not holding my breath waiting for a Representative Democracy to suddenly appear from this oligarchy/oil-a-garchy.

This doesn’t mean I am ending the effort – far from it. It does mean that it is important to strongly support all those who have stood up during this time (Kucinich, Wexler, etc.) and look to replace those that did not or worse, got in the way (Pelosi, etc.).

  2. Indeed, the writer of the first comment makes a valid point. Still, the huge vote for tabling is very disheartening. Once again the voices of the people are ignored while politicians do the “safe” thing and our democracy is eroded. It is a well known fact that the Democratic elite in DC scuttled the attempt made by the Washington state legislature to pass a similar impeachment resolution. I am astonished that they also managed to get to the 400 legislators in New Hampshire. I am once again embarrassed and outraged at the naivety and indifference to the criminals who have been running our government and to the need to hold them accountable. But if the Democrats retain control of Congress and–better–take over the White House–it should leave them free in November and December to hold impeachment hearings without running scared. A vote to impeach in the House in the fading days of fascism would at least repudiate that regime and tell the world Americans do not share the values of Bush, Cheney, and the neocon cabal. Maybe that is our last best hope, dear friends.

  3. You know, this all sounds well and good, but the fact of the matter is, it means nothing. Up until about a year ago, I lived in the State of Vermont and was a part of the effort to have the same type of bill drafted and passed. On February 4, 2006, Vermonters all over the state held their annual town meetings in which a majority of the state voted to send the case for impeachment to the State’s legislature. In April of last year, they passed a bill (16-9) calling for Congress to begin the impeachment process. The point I’m trying to make is that our government, even those people in opposition to the Bush-Cheney administration, don’t want any such proceedings to go on. It should stand as no surprise to anyone reading this article when the NH bill falls on deaf ears even once it is passed and that the ultimate problem our country faces today is the fact that our Constitution has become nothing more than 232 year old toilet paper with which this administration has so liberally whiped their collective ass.
